Today, I discovered, it's not just me that Lincoln gives the 'okay, whatever - you're just stupid' looks to.
Lincoln is in Sports Camp this week. He goes daily from 0830 to 1130. He loves it! I'm okay with it except that on Tuesday and Thursday, they take them to the pool. NO ONE has ever EVER taken Lincoln to the pool except me. I have to say, I was pretty stressed about the whole situation so I decided to do what any good mother should do. I stalked the camp! Actually, when I dropped him off this morning, I told them I was going to be stalking them. I didn't let Lincoln know that I was going to come which I thought was very good of me!
I was told they would be getting to the pool at 10:15, so I got to the pool around 10:30 ish, take up my post outside the glass viewing area - out of Lincoln's sight- and they were already all in the water. I notice that Lincoln is with this group of three other girls about his size and a life-guard. He (and the other girls) are all wearing life-jackets. The lifeguard has them on the edge of the pool where it's about 2 feet deep and has them jumping into the water. She's got them all lined up and then she'll take them by the hands and help them jump in. They do this for about 10 minutes. Each time, Lincoln waits for his turn and each time it's his turn he holds her hands and jumps in like she's tell them. (It was rather wierd really, because I don't think I've held Lincoln's hands to let him jump in since he was less than a year old - but anyway - he appeared to be okay with this whole situation.)
So, after a few minutes of Lincoln and these girls jumping in, the lifeguard takes off their life and has them standing holding the wall... she's telling them something about how they are going to push off with their feet and she'll help them float out and bring them back. I didn't quite hear that part, but then someone opened the door and walked into the pool area and I hear her saying 'don't worry, I'll help you guys'. Then the door closes and I'm back to visual only. (I should have bugged his bathing suit!) Anyway, she does this first little girl and then it's Lincoln's turn. I don't know really what he's saying to her, but he's telling her something and then she shakes her head at him and tells him something and he shakes his head at her. I assume it was something about not needing her to help him, becuase after a second or two of discussion, she takes a step back and let's him do it himself, but she looks poised and ready to jump in and save him. (This relieved me a little becuase, although Lincoln can swim, my whole fear of him at the pool was that no one would be watching him and he'd get pushed under by another kid or something.)
So, she said something to him once more just before he took up the stance at the side of the pool and I assume she said something about staying beside him just in case. (Remember the looks that I've said Lincoln gives me that is laced with the 'you are stupid' tone. I'm sure the look he gave the lifeguard was that kind of a look. It was a 'I don't need you're help - you're nuts' kinda look.
So she let's him push off but is standing there all ready to catch him... only to look quite shocked when he just motors across the pool. Later when I was picking him up, I said, "Did you have fun and listen?" This lifegaurd looks at me and says, "When they give me kids in lifejackets, I have a certain expectation of what the kids can and can't do. They tricked me with him . He sure can swim hey?"
